June 2008: Elastin Fibers
Image accompanying monthly feature
Robert P. Mecham, Ph.D., Alumni Endowed Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology, professor of pediatrics and of medicine, was elected to the Section on Biological Sciences in October 2007 for distinguished contributions to the field of elastin fibers, particularly for analysis of elastin fiber composition and assembly, and the cell biology of elastin.

Image at left: Mouse lung stained with antibodies to elastin (green) and and the endothelial cell marker flk (red). Dapi was used to mark nuclei (blue). Antibody images were superimposed over DIC image of same tissue section. Flk-positive endothelial cells were detected throughout the lung mesenchyme as interconnected strands associated with vasculogenic vessels that are forming during this period. Staining with the elastin antibody showed strong signal in airway smooth muscle and in well-developed blood vessels. (Image provided by Dr. Sean McLean)
